A subway conductor was hospitalized after he was assaulted on a Lower East Side J train during the height of Wednesday morning’s rush hour — an attack that sparked mass panic among the hundreds of commuters on the train.
The conductor was attacked after his J train stopped at the Essex St./Delancey St. station about 8:55 a.m.
Bedlam quickly ensued, with several passengers claiming to smell smoke, although no fire was reported.
“Someone yelled run and all hell broke loose,” said one commuter identified as Wbernard, who tweeted a short video of the mayhem.

In the video, passengers are urging other fellow commuters to stay calm.
“Right now we don’t know what is going on, but no one here is hurt,” one woman could be heard over the din. “At this moment you are safe.”
Another commuter assured everyone that the police were nearby.
“The cops are down at the other train car where the problem is. Everybody stay tight,” the subway rider said. “You can get out at either end, but the cops are down at the end sorting out what the problem is.”
