March 4th Statewide Strike & Day of Action - City of Oakland; Strike, Walkouts, and Actions
On September 24th 5,000 workers and students went on strike and rallied against cutbacks and layoffs at UC Berkeley.
A follow-up conference drew 800 mostly young people who called a one day strike and day of action across California for March 4th, 2010.
To those of you against the cuts in education and public services, foreclosures and layoffs, the movement for March 4th wants you to join and be part of a powerful state-wide strike.
In Oakland, classes are overcrowded and the dropout rate is alarmingly high. Society only offers Wal-Mart type jobs, or incarceration as a future for our youth. Workers face only more intense conditions at work as layoffs increase the workload for the remaining staff.
16% of Oakland residents are officially unemployed. Every year more Oakland schools close due to budget cuts. Oakland Unified School Teachers, Building and Grounds workers, and other public sector workers are having their wages, benefits, and conditions driven back decades. We want a future and we will fight for it. Now is the time to begin a fightback.
