Portuguese dockworker' unions on strike between 17 and 24 September

The Joint Trade Union Maritime-Port Front announced this Monday that had given advance notice of industrial action in Portuguese ports, with different dates for the different union, covering the total period of 17-24 September. Dockworker' unions from Central and Southern Portugal - Lisbon, Setúbal and Figueira da Foz, Caniçal, Sines, Aveiro and Viana do Castelo have given notice of industrial action from 12pm on Wednesday 19 until 8am Friday 21 September.

 

 

In a statement, the Common Front accused the government of having a "distressing lack of industry knowledge 'and adopting an' autistic attitude towards workers by trying to implement " a set of measures (...) which strongly harm Portuguese seafarers and port workers'.

 

The dockers ‘ unions from the Center and South of Portugal (which includes Lisbon, Setúbal and Figueira da Foz), Caniçal, Sines, Aveiro and Viana do Castelo have given notice of industrial action from 12pm on Wednesday 19 until 8am Friday 21 September.

 

The National Union of Port Authority Workers have called the strike for the full 21 and 24 September  (Friday- Monday), according to the pre-notices of the Mainland, Azores and Madeira.

 

For its part, the Union of Captains, Officers Pilots, Commissioners and Engineers from the Merchant Navy have given notice of strike from Monday 17 until midnight  Tuesday 18, same period as the Union of the State Technical Staff.

 

"This Joint Trade Union Front blames the Portuguese government by labor instability experienced at the moment at the maritime sector and national port as well as the inevitable constraints and tremendous impact that this climate is producing at the ports and in detriment to the national economy,".

In mid-August, the vice president of the Confederation of Maritime and Port Trade Unions (Fesmarpor), Victor Dias, said the Europeans unions of dockers and seafarers would support a boycott? of vessels whose origin or destination is Portugal.

 

Speaking to the Lusa Agency, Victor Dias explained that Spanish and French trade union delegations were already in Sines to demonstrate 'out loud, its total solidarity with the struggle of the Portuguese seafarers and dockers'.
